TikTok says there is no internet connection: what can you do?

Does TikTok say ‘no internet connection’ or ‘No Connection’? First open a new web page and then try TikTok on Wi Fi and mobile data. This helps you find out whether your internet is not working or whether only TikTok is having problems. Does everything else work? Check for an outage and restart TikTok. Do not delete the app yet, because you may lose unfinished videos in your drafts.

Follow the steps below or go straight to the situation you recognise.

Why does TikTok say there is no internet connection?

The message does not say exactly what is wrong. Your phone may be connected to Wi Fi while that network has no working internet. A problem with the app, an outage or a network restriction may also be the cause.

First check what still works. The table shows which step fits the situation.

Does TikTok open, but do videos keep loading without showing this connection message? Then read the explanation about TikTok not loading.

Test your internet connection for TikTok

1. Open a new web page. A photo or message already displayed on your screen may have loaded earlier. It therefore does not show whether your internet is working now.
2. Switch connections. Turn off Wi Fi and open TikTok using mobile data. Keep your data allowance in mind. You can also try another trusted Wi Fi network.
3. Do the same on both networks. For example, open a different video each time. Do not change several settings at once, otherwise you will not know which change helped.
4. Does the internet work on neither connection? Turn flight mode on briefly and then off again. Restart your phone if that does not help.

Also, Android Help recommends switching between Wi Fi and mobile data, testing flight mode and restarting your phone or router when dealing with connection problems.

Does TikTok work as soon as you switch connections? Then go below to the section about the connection that does not work. You do not need to delete the app now.

Check whether TikTok is experiencing an outage in the Netherlands or Belgium

Do other apps work but TikTok does not? Look for recent outage reports for TikTok. Choose the Netherlands or Belgium on an independent outage website and check when the reports were posted.

• Do the reports concern the current situation, or are you reading an old message?
• Do others see the same error, such as no connection or videos that do not open?
• Does someone near you have the same problem on another network?

An outage website collects reports from users. These reports are not official confirmation from TikTok. Many recent reports may nevertheless indicate an outage. This is especially true if someone on another network has the same problem.

Does it appear to be a major outage? Do not change your settings for now and try TikTok again later. Reinstalling the app will not fix an outage at TikTok itself.

Restart TikTok and check for updates

Does there appear to be no outage? Fully close TikTok and open the app again. Simply returning to your phone’s home screen does not always close the app.

Then check your phone’s official app store to see whether an update for TikTok is available. Install it and try the app again.

Do not use an unknown APK. This is a standalone installation file for Android. Also do not install an app that promises to repair TikTok.

Does one feature not work, or does the whole app not work?

Can you watch videos, but not search or upload? Write down what does and does not work. You do not need to delete the entire app immediately if one feature is causing problems.

Is another account already available on your phone, and does it work? Mention this when you report the problem to TikTok. The difference does not prove that your account has been blocked. Do not log out just for this test if you are not sure you can log in again.

Clear only TikTok’s cache

The cache is a collection of temporary files saved by the app. If only TikTok continues to have problems, you can try clearing these files.

1. In TikTok’s settings, look for an option containing the word cache. The name and location may differ between versions.
2. Read what the app is going to delete before confirming.
3. Clear only the cache. Do not choose drafts, clear all data or clear storage.
4. Open TikTok again and try the same action as before.

Do you not see a clear option to clear only the cache? Skip this step. Do not simply choose a button that looks similar.

Clearing the cache is not the same as clearing all app data. If you clear all data or delete the app, you may lose drafts stored on your phone. First check whether you want to keep any unfinished videos.

TikTok works on Wi Fi, but not on mobile data

Turn off Wi Fi and open a new web page. Does that not work either? Then check your mobile connection:

• Is mobile data turned on, and do you still have data in your allowance?
• Is TikTok allowed to use mobile data? Find TikTok in your phone’s settings. The available options differ by device.
• Is data saving turned on? Check whether that setting restricts usage.
• Do you have poor reception? Try it in a place with better reception.

Does the browser work over mobile data but TikTok does not? Write down which provider you use and which error message you see. This helps you explain in a problem report that TikTok works only on the mobile network.

TikTok works on mobile data, but not on Wi Fi

Then the problem seems to be with that Wi Fi network. Check whether another device on the same Wi Fi can open new web pages.

Is it your own router? Restart it. Do not use the reset button, as this may erase network settings. While it restarts, other people at home will also briefly have no internet.

On Wi Fi in a hotel, train or café, you may first need to log in or accept terms. Open your browser and check whether a sign in page appears. TikTok cannot complete that step for you.

A school or employer may restrict certain services on the network. Ask the administrator whether that is the case here. Do not change the settings yourself on a network that does not belong to you.

TikTok has no connection with a VPN or while travelling

A VPN routes your internet traffic through another connection. Are you already using a VPN? Temporarily turn it off on a trusted network and try TikTok again. Have you set up a network filter yourself? You can also disable it temporarily, but only if you know how to turn it back on.

Do not immediately install a VPN to solve this error. A VPN can make the connection more complicated and does not always help.

Are you abroad? Check whether your subscription allows internet use at your destination. You may need to turn on data roaming. This lets you use mobile data through a foreign network. First check what this may cost.

Network rules or restrictions in a country may also play a role. The message ‘no internet connection’ alone does not show whether that is the cause.

When should you reinstall TikTok or report a problem?

Reinstalling is only the next step if TikTok does not work on multiple networks. First try restarting the app, updating it and, if necessary, clearing the cache. Are there signs of an outage? It is better to wait.

Save your drafts and check that you can log in

• View your drafts. Are there unfinished videos you want to keep? They may exist only on your phone.
• Where possible, save important videos outside TikTok. Check that you can open the saved files. A saved video is not the same as a draft that you can still edit.
• Check your access. Make sure you can log in and have access to the linked email address, phone number or another login method.

Cannot you safely save important drafts? Report the problem before deleting TikTok. If you decide to reinstall the app, use only the official app store.

Clearly describe what is going wrong

The TikTok help for reporting a problem lists this route: Profile, menu, Settings and privacy, Report a problem. The names may differ. Look for help in the settings if you do not see the option.

Include this information in your report:

• The exact error text and when you see it.
• Your device, the operating system version and the TikTok version.
• Whether the problem occurs on Wi Fi, mobile data or both.
• Whether the entire app does not work or only one feature.
• Which steps you have already tried.

A fictional example: “Since this afternoon, I have been getting ‘No Connection’ when opening videos. New web pages work. It happens on my home Wi Fi and via mobile data. I have restarted TikTok and my phone.”
