If you can’t create a new Instagram account, it may be because of the details you entered, a confirmation code that doesn’t arrive or a technical issue. First, read the error message and check which step is causing the problem. Does Instagram mention an existing or disabled account? Then you need to do something different from when the page simply gets stuck.
Below, you’ll find the checks that match your situation and when it’s better to recover your old account.
Where does creating your Instagram account get stuck?
See what happens after you enter your details. Is a field rejected, are you waiting for a code or is the page not responding? Use the table to choose what to check first.
| What happens? | What should you check first? |
|---|---|
| An entered field is not accepted. | Read the explanation for that field and check for typing errors. |
| You don’t receive a confirmation code. | Check your email address or phone number. If you’re expecting an email, also check your junk mail. |
| The message mentions an existing account. | Check whether you previously created an account with these details. |
| The page won’t load or gets stuck. | Check your connection and follow the technical steps below. |
| Instagram asks you to try again later. | Stop trying for now. If the message specifies a waiting period, follow it. |
| Instagram says that your account is disabled. | Read the explanation for that message instead of creating another account. |
A general error message does not give a clear cause. So, such a message does not automatically mean that your phone number is blocked or that you are no longer allowed to create additional accounts.
Which details should you check when creating an Instagram account?
Review the details you entered. Change one thing at a time so you can see which change helps.
- Check your email address. Check whether any letters or full stops are missing and whether you accidentally typed a space. Also open your inbox to check that you can access it.
- Check your phone number. Use the correct country code: +31 for the Netherlands or +32 for Belgium. Follow the example in the form.
- Read the explanation for your username and password. Change the field that Instagram rejects. Follow the requirements in the form, not those in old tips on the internet.
- Enter your real date of birth. If you receive a message about this, read it first. Don’t change your age to get around a restriction.
Has the confirmation code not arrived?
Are you expecting an email? Also check your junk folder. Are you waiting for an SMS? Check that your phone has reception and that you entered the correct number.
Don’t immediately request a series of new codes. Note when you request a code and follow the instructions on screen. Never share the code with anyone who says they can create your account for you.
Example: suppose you’re waiting for an email but discover that you typed one letter of your email address incorrectly. Correct the address first, then request another code.
Can you use the same email address or phone number for a new Instagram account?
Don’t assume that this is always possible. Is Instagram rejecting your email address or phone number? Read the reason in the message. A typing error requires a different action from a message about an existing account.
Do you want to return to your old profile, with your photos and contacts? Then try to recover access to that account. A new account won’t give you access to your old profile.
The Instagram help for a lost email address or phone number covers recovering access and updating account details.
Do you want to create a separate profile instead? Use only your own email address or phone number that can receive messages. Don’t borrow a number to receive a code. You may need that number again later.
What should you do if Instagram registration gets stuck?
Is the page not responding? Try the checks below. They can help you find out where the problem occurs, but they won’t lift a restriction on your account.
- Open another website. If that won’t load either, check your internet connection first.
- Close Instagram and reopen the app. Are you using a browser? Open the registration page again.
- Check whether there is an update for the app. Install it through your phone’s official app store.
- Try the official website if the app gets stuck. Check whether you can continue creating your account there. Don’t do this to get around a block mentioned by Instagram in a message.
Does the same error keep appearing? Stop repeatedly submitting your details. If the message does not specify a waiting period, there is no reliable way to say how long you should wait. Another device or a different internet connection is not a guaranteed solution either.
What should you do if your Instagram account is disabled?
Read the entire message. A disabled account is different from a form that gets stuck. Does Instagram give you the option to have the decision reviewed? If so, follow the instructions for that option.
If you don’t see that option, save the exact message for your support request. Creating a new account won’t restore your disabled account.
Can you log in, but does one feature not work? Then the issue is probably not about creating an account. For example, read why you can’t post a message on Instagram or why you can’t send messages on Instagram.
When should you ask for help creating your Instagram account?
Does the same error keep appearing after you’ve checked your details and connection? Ask for help through Instagram’s official help centre. If the error message explains how to get help, follow those instructions.
Gather this information beforehand:
- The exact error message, preferably with a screenshot.
- The step where the problem occurs, for example after entering your email address.
- Whether you’re using the app or a browser.
- Which checks you have already completed.
Hide your password, confirmation codes and contact details that are not needed in the screenshot. With this information, you can clearly explain what is going wrong. It does not guarantee a response or recovery.
Has your account been created and can you log in? If you then want to post your first short video, read how to create an Instagram Reel.
Use the help in the app for this. Meta also describes the support options for account problems.
