“Story unavailable” on Instagram means that you cannot open that story at that moment. It may have expired or been deleted. You may no longer have access, or there may be a technical problem. You cannot infer that from this message. You only see that the story does not open, not why.
Open that person’s profile and see whether you can start the Story there. This lets you try another route to the story. It is not a test that proves whether you have been blocked.
Do you know that person? You can ask: “Their story does not open for me. Is it still online?” That way, you do not have to guess what is happening.
What can you do if an Instagram Story does not open?
Try the steps below one at a time. After each step, open the same Story again to see whether anything has changed.
- Open another Story. Choose a story from another account. Check whether only the first story does not work or whether multiple Stories do not open.
- Check your internet. Open a regular web page. Does that not load either? If possible, switch between wifi and mobile data. Keep your data allowance in mind.
- Fully close Instagram. Then reopen the app and try the story again.
- Check whether there is an update. Open your phone’s app store and check whether you can update Instagram. Is there no update? Skip this step.
- Restart your phone. Then also try opening a few other Stories.
- Try again later. Are multiple stories still getting stuck? Tapping again and again will not help much then. You cannot solve a problem with Instagram itself from your own app.

When can you not recover an Instagram Story yourself?
Has the story expired or been deleted? Then using another connection and updating the app will not help. If you do not have access either, repeatedly refreshing is pointless.
