Your followers may miss your Instagram post because it appears low in their feed or because they have not looked very much. Few likes do not immediately mean that your post is hidden. First, ask a follower to open your profile. Is your photo or video visible there? If so, that calls for a different approach than when your post is missing there too.
Go through the checks below to see where things are going wrong and what you can do.
Check where your Instagram post is missing
“I didn’t see your photo” is different from “I can’t open your photo.” First find out what your follower means.
- Open your own profile. Is the photo or video there, and has posting finished?
- Ask a follower to look for the same post. Ask them to open your profile first.
- Ask where the post was missing. Only in the regular feed, or on your profile too?
- Ask another follower to check this too. What one person sees does not yet tell you what all your followers see.

Why your Instagram post appears lower in the feed
The feed is the section where you scroll through posts. According to Meta’s explanation of the Instagram feed from 2022, Instagram considers which actions it expects and how often someone responds to your posts. Posts may also appear lower down or be excluded.
That explanation does not provide every current detail. You therefore cannot infer from it that Instagram first shows every new post to a fixed percentage of your followers.
A hypothetical example: you post a photo of your new bicycle. A follower opens Instagram briefly and views only a few posts. Your photo may be available without that person coming across it during that visit.
That is why you should also ask whether your follower used Instagram around that time. This helps distinguish someone who looked only briefly from a possible problem with your account.
See how many Instagram followers have seen your post
Do you have insights? Then first look at reach: the number of unique accounts that saw your post. Likes and comments are actions, not numbers of people. Someone can take several actions. Another person may view your photo without doing anything.
Check whether you can separately see how many followers and non followers you reached. Do you only see the total reach? Then you cannot determine from that how many of your own followers saw the post.
Hypothetical calculation example: you have 600 followers. According to your insights, 120 accounts that follow you saw the post. Calculate the percentage as follows:
120 ÷ 600 × 100 = 20%.
You divide the number of followers reached by your total number of followers. Then multiply the result by 100. In this example, you reached approximately 20% of your followers. This assumes that your number of followers remained approximately the same during that period.
That does not mean that the other 80% deliberately ignored you. The figure does not tell you who was active or why someone missed the post. Also, 20% is not a general standard for good reach.
- Compare the same types of posts. For example, compare individual photos with other individual photos.
- Measure after the same amount of time. Compare a post after two days with other posts after two days.
- Look at multiple posts. One poorly viewed photo says little about your entire account.
- Record reach and actions separately. The same number of viewers but fewer comments is different from fewer viewers.
Do you not have insights? Ask a few followers whether they can open the post on your profile. This does not tell you how many people saw it, but it does tell you whether they can access it.
Are you also losing followers? Then read why you are losing Instagram followers. Losing followers is different from existing followers not seeing your post.
Check your Instagram account status when posts are missing
Look for Account status in the settings. Read any notices there about your post or account. The location and available options may differ. Cannot find the section? Use the help in the app.
Look carefully at what a notice concerns. Was one post removed? Can you not use a particular feature? Or is it about recommendations to people who do not follow you? A notice about recommendations does not prove that your own followers can no longer see anything.
Can you request a new review through the notice? Read the reason first. Use that option if you think a mistake was made.
Is there no notice, but several followers cannot open your post? Note which post it is, when the problem started and what you have already checked. Then report it through Instagram’s help. Never give your password to anyone who promises to restore your reach.
Low reach alone does not prove a shadowban. That name is often used for suspected hidden restrictions. You cannot establish this with one test or one poorly viewed photo.
Find Instagram posts through Following and Favorites
In Meta’s announcement from 2022 Following and Favorites are described as feeds with posts from followed or selected accounts. Newer posts appear before older ones there.
Does a follower want to find your posts more easily? Ask them to check whether Following or Favorites is available in their own app. Even in a chronological feed, someone has to look far enough to come across your post.
You can try this in the Netherlands and Belgium, but the 2022 announcement does not say how the options currently appear on every account. Is the choice missing? Then your follower can open your profile directly to look for a particular post.
Does your follower want a notification about new posts? Ask them to check the available notification options on your profile. Not receiving a notification does not mean that the post is missing.
What you can try when your Instagram reach is low
Can followers open your post, and is there no account notice explaining the problem? Then try small changes to your next posts. Change one thing at a time so you can better see what makes a difference.
- Make it clear what your post is about. Choose a photo in which the subject is easy to recognize. Is your image blurry? Read why your Instagram posts are blurry.
- Say something specific about your photo. For homemade bread, for example, you could write what you did differently from last time.
- Ask a question if you want to know the answer. For that bread photo, for example: “What flour do you use for a crisp crust?” This relates to your post, unlike a separate request to comment.
- Try a different posting time. Choose a time when your followers may be able to look. Then compare several similar posts, not just the first attempt.
- Keep track of what you do simply. Record the subject, posting time and reach after a fixed period. Look for differences that recur more often.
Do not delete a post immediately because it has few likes. You will then also no longer be able to compare how its reach developed later. Avoid services that promise guaranteed reach or a quick solution for a shadowban.
Also, buy Instagram followers does not guarantee that existing followers will see your posts. A higher number of followers is different from reach or genuine attention.
