According to YouTube, MrBeast has the most YouTube subscribers. In the post about his subscriber record YouTube reported the milestone of 500 million subscribers on 12 June 2026. That is a figure recorded on a particular date, not a live counter. When checking a ranking, always confirm when the figures were recorded and whether the list is about subscribers or views.
Below, you will learn how to compare large channels and what their figures do and do not tell you.
How do you compare the biggest YouTube channels?
By the biggest YouTube channel, people usually mean the channel with the most subscribers. A list based on views may have a different order. So first check what a ranking counts.
Also pay attention to which channels are included. A worldwide list of all channels is different from a list containing only individual creators. A channel may belong to a company, for example. And behind one well known creator there may be a large team.
| Type of ranking | What are you comparing? | What should you look for? |
|---|---|---|
| All channels | Creators, music channels, companies and other channels together | A channel is not always one person. |
| Individual creators | Channels centred around a recognisable creator | That creator may work with a large team. |
| Total views | All counted views of a channel | This is not a subscriber ranking. |
Why do more YouTube subscribers not always mean more views?
A subscriber is an account that follows a channel. A view is a counted viewing of a video. You can watch a video without subscribing. Conversely, you can follow a channel without watching every new video.
Views are also not the same as unique viewers. One person can watch multiple videos. So when you add those views together, you are counting viewing occasions, not individual people.
Fictional example: Channel A has 1 million subscribers. A new video on that channel has 80.000 views. Channel B has 400.000 subscribers and a new video with 200.000 views. A has more subscribers, but B’s video has been watched more often.
These figures do not show what proportion of subscribers watched. For that, you need to know which views came from subscribers. Also give both videos the same amount of time before comparing the totals.
The same applies when you compare MrBeast and T Series. A higher position on the subscriber list does not automatically mean a higher position on the views list. For that comparison, you need both types of figures from the same point in time.
How accurate are public YouTube subscriber figures?
According to YouTube’s explanation of subscriber counts public figures are abbreviated. Between 100 and 999 million, the visible figure changes by the million. YouTube removes closed accounts and spam subscribers from the total.
The public counter therefore gives an indication of a channel’s size. You cannot see every new subscriber on it. Two channels with the same visible figure do not necessarily have exactly the same number of subscribers.
Is the number falling on your own channel? Then read why you can lose YouTube subscribers. You cannot tell the cause from the decrease alone.
How to check a YouTube subscriber ranking
Want to know whether a ranking is still useful? Check these four points:
- Find the date. ‘2026’ in the title alone is not enough. Check which day the figures were recorded.
- See what the list counts. Is it about subscribers, all the views of a channel or only views of recent videos?
- Check which channels are included. A list containing only individual creators is not the same as a worldwide list of all channels.
- Compare figures from the same point in time. Do not place the current number for one channel next to an old milestone for another.
Want to compare a few channels yourself? Record each channel’s name, visible subscriber count and date. Put views in a separate column. This keeps clear which figures you are comparing.
What can you learn from large YouTube channels?
A ranking shows how many subscribers a channel has, but not why it has that many. So you cannot derive a fixed approach to success from it.
You can, however, look at how a large channel presents its videos. Do you immediately understand what a video is about? And do you know what to expect from the next video? Ask yourself those questions about your own videos too. You do not need to copy topics or expensive productions for that.
Want to get started? Then read the guide to starting a YouTube channel. If you have already posted videos, you can continue reading about getting more YouTube subscribers.
Considering buying YouTube subscribers? Then make the same distinction between numbers and attention. Bought subscribers do not guarantee that real people will watch your videos, respond to them or discover them naturally.
