Instagram account deleted or disabled: what can you do?

Person noting information beside a phone to prepare for recovering an Instagram account.

Does your Instagram account appear to have been deleted? First, try logging in through the official app or website and save the notice. Being unable to log in does not automatically mean that your account is gone. Does it say that Instagram has disabled your account? Follow the steps to appeal. Have your details been changed without your permission? First seek help for a potentially hacked account.

Below, you can read which steps suit your situation and what you can do if no response comes.

Has your Instagram account been deleted, disabled or hacked?

Even if a friend can no longer find your profile, you still do not know whether it has been permanently deleted. So check what you see when you try to log in.

What do you see? What should you do first?
A notice that your account has been disabled or suspended Read the reason and check whether you can request a new review.
Your password does not work and your details have unexpectedly changed Assume a possible hack and seek help through the official app or website.
You temporarily deactivated your account yourself Try logging in with your own details and read what Instagram says.
You asked for your account to be deleted yourself Check the confirmation. See whether it still includes an option to cancel the deletion.
You only receive a general error message Also try the official website. You may receive more information there.

Can you no longer access the linked email address either? Try recovering it through your email provider. Keep emails about changes to your account. Open Instagram itself instead of clicking an unexpected link.

Is the notice about a suspension? Then read the explanation about a suspended Instagram account. Would you rather remove the account yourself? Then see how to delete Instagram without a password handle it.

Why has Instagram disabled your account?

Instagram’s notice is your first clue. Check whether it concerns a post, your identity, your age or something that happened on your account.

Write down the exact wording. Is there no clear reason? Write that down too, so you can ask about it in your appeal.

Instagram may have made a mistake or someone else may have used your account. Mention this only if you have indications of it. Describe what you saw, such as a change to your email address that you did not request yourself.

How do you appeal against a disabled Instagram account?

Follow the steps Instagram offers with your notice. The buttons and options may differ. Prepare your appeal as follows:

  1. Save the notice. Take a screenshot and note the date.
  2. Read the explanation. Pay attention to the reason, the information requested and any deadline for responding.
  3. Choose appeal or a new review if that option is shown. If it is missing, look for help with a disabled account through the official app or website.
  4. Briefly explain what you believe is incorrect. Mention your username, the notice and why you think the decision is incorrect.
  5. Keep what you send. Save your text, the confirmation and any case number. You can identify that number as the reference for your request.

This is a fictional example. Adapt it to your own situation:

My account @voorbeeldprofiel has been inaccessible since 8 April. The notice mentions a violation, but I cannot see what I may have done wrong. I believe the decision is incorrect and request a new review. Could you explain why my account has been disabled?

Do you suspect a hack? Mention which details were changed without your permission. Do not include a password or login code.

What information should you keep for your Instagram appeal?

Put all the information in one folder. This makes it easy to find if Instagram asks a question.

  • Your username and the linked email address.
  • The last date on which you still had access.
  • The full notice, including the reason and any deadline.
  • Emails about changed account details.
  • The text and date of each appeal.
  • Replies and any case numbers.

Also write down what happened and in what order. A fictional example: first, logging in did not work, then you found an email about a changed password and subsequently submitted an appeal.

Keep sensitive information private. Do not put your email address, phone number, recovery code or identity document in a public post. If Instagram asks you to verify your identity through the official recovery route, first check where you need to submit those details.

What can you do if Instagram does not respond?

Check your junk mail and any notifications in the app. Then read your confirmation: does it say when you can expect a response or what you still need to do? Without such an indication, you cannot assume a fixed waiting time.

Meta announced in December 2025 new support for Facebook and Instagram accounts Which help you can use may differ by region and situation.

Can you respond to your existing request? In a short message, mention the date of your appeal, your case number and your question. Do not keep submitting the same appeal if you have no new information.

Can you find nowhere to turn or are you receiving no answer to your question? Note this in your overview. This can also help if you later seek legal advice.

Are you considering creating a new profile in the meantime? That will not restore your old account. If you cannot create one, read why you cannot create a new Instagram account.

What rights do you have with a blocked Instagram account?

Do you live in the Netherlands or Belgium? The DSA may be relevant. These are European rules for online platforms. The legal explanation from Penrose about deleted social media accounts covers this.

What you can do depends partly on the decision you received. Have your notice and overview of events to hand. If necessary, find out which of these options suits your situation:

  • Request an explanation: what reason must Instagram give for this decision?
  • Submit a complaint to Instagram: can you have the decision reviewed again, and within what timeframe must you ask?
  • Use a European dispute resolution body: can a recognised, independent organisation handle your complaint without court proceedings?
  • Report it to a regulator: might the platform be applying the rules incorrectly? A regulator checks whether organisations comply with rules.

In the Netherlands, check with the ACM which report is appropriate. In Belgium, use official government information to find out which regulator is responsible for the DSA and how to submit a report. Check this before sending personal details or documents.

A report to a regulator is not the same as asking Instagram to restore your account. Ask what that authority can do with your report.

Is your account important to your income or do you need to respond by a particular date? Seek targeted legal advice and take your saved information with you.

How do you recognise fake help with Instagram account recovery?

Do not pay because someone promises they can definitely recover your account. Be especially careful with anyone who claims to have a secret contact at Instagram or pressures you to pay immediately.

  • Do not give anyone your password, recovery codes or codes from SMS or an authentication app.
  • Do not send an identity document to anyone offering help through a private message.
  • Do not let a stranger control your phone or computer remotely.
  • Check offered help through the official app or website that you open yourself.

Have you already shared details? Secure your email account first. Change shared passwords for accounts you can still access. Have you paid? Ask your bank or payment service what options are available.

How do you secure your Instagram account after recovery?

Check your email address and phone number as soon as you regain access. Also review the list of logged in devices if available. Check for posts that you did not publish yourself.

  • Choose a unique password that you do not use anywhere else.
  • Turn on two step verification. This is an additional check alongside your password.
  • Store recovery codes in a safe place outside Instagram.
  • Revoke access for unknown devices or linked apps if you come across them.
  • Keep your own copies of photos and videos that you do not want to lose.

These steps help prevent unwanted access. Has Instagram disabled your account because of your account or a post? Also read the reason for that decision. A new password will not solve that problem.
