I cannot confirm a current date when TikTok will be banned for everyone in the Netherlands or Belgium. Do you see news about a ban? First check which country and users it applies to. A rule for officials’ work phones is not a ban for everyone. A US measure also does not automatically apply to your account here.

Will TikTok be banned in the Netherlands?
Do not assume there is a fixed Dutch ban date just because you see one in a video or news headline. Without a confirmed decision, you do not know whether anything will change for your use of TikTok.
TikTok itself reports the introduction of TikTok Shop in the Netherlands. That report concerns a TikTok service, not what the government permits now or later.
Do you see the headline “TikTok is being banned”? Open the full report and check these four points:
- The country: is it really about the Netherlands?
- The users: does the measure apply to everyone, employees of a particular employer, or only public servants?
- The decision: is it still a proposal, or has something already been decided?
- The date: when was the report posted, and when would the rule take effect?
A fictional example: a video says that TikTok will disappear “from Monday”. Without a country, a full date and a reference to a decision, you still do not know whether this applies to your phone.
Is there a TikTok ban in Belgium?
I also cannot confirm a current date for a ban affecting everyone in Belgium. Pay particular attention to the difference between rules for ordinary users and rules for government employees.
TikTok itself reports the launch of TikTok Shop in Belgium. This too is news from the company, not an official decision about a possible ban.
When reading Belgian news, check which government is mentioned. Is it the federal government, another government, or all of Belgium? A rule for employees of one government does not automatically apply to everyone living in Belgium.
What does a TikTok ban mean for public servants?
A restriction on work phones is different from a nationwide ban. I cannot confirm the precise current rules for Dutch national government officials and Belgian federal officials.
Do you work for one of these governments? Ask your manager or the department that manages work phones and computers for the written rule. Then check which device it applies to:

Do not assume that an exception applies to you. For example, ask: “Does this rule also apply to my own phone, on which I read work email?” This will give you an answer that fits your situation.
When will TikTok be banned in the United States?
I cannot reliably confirm the current US situation or any new effective date. Do you come across the date January 19, 2025? Do not treat it as a current or upcoming deadline.
Find a recent report explaining the latest decision. An announced measure is not the same as a rule that is already in effect. Also check whether the measure has been postponed.
Then read what “ban” means in that report. Does it concern downloading the app, receiving updates, or using TikTok? Or does it concern conditions for the company behind TikTok? That makes a difference to what users notice.

What does a TikTok ban say about security?
Whether you can use TikTok and how the app handles your data are two different questions. The fact that an app is available does not mean you no longer need to check anything. Conversely, a restriction on work phones does not prove that someone has broken into your account.
For work phones, it is important to know what information an app can access. Think of contacts, photos and your location. Also check on your own phone what access you give TikTok. Give permission only for what you need.

How can you prepare for a possible TikTok ban?
Also preserve your own videos and important texts outside TikTok. You do not need to know a ban date to do this. These steps are also useful if you later stop using the app yourself.
- Save your original videos outside the app. Also save the files on your computer or in an online storage service. Open a few videos to check that they have been saved properly.
- Save your captions separately. Put texts that you want to reuse in a document. That way, you will not have to type them out later from old posts.
- Check your recovery details. Check whether you still have access to the email address and phone number associated with your account.
- If necessary, choose a second place where people can find you. Do you regularly share videos or use TikTok for your shop? If so, let people know where they can reach you outside TikTok, such as on your own website.
- Check the news before changing your plans. Do not cancel a planned video or collaboration based only on a report without a date.
A fictional example: you post cooking videos and save the recipes only in your captions. Also put the recipes and original recordings in your own folder. That way, you can continue using them if you can no longer access your account.
