If you can’t tag someone on Instagram, it may be because of an incorrect username, the other person’s settings, a block or a technical issue. First, check the username on the profile. Then see whether tagging only fails for that person. Is the tag on your post but not on the other person’s profile? Approval may still be required.

Tagging isn’t working: what should you check first?
See where things are going wrong before changing your settings. This table helps you choose where to start.

Did you get an error message? Save the exact text. It will help you search more precisely than just “it doesn’t work”. Don’t keep adding the same tag if it is rejected.
Tagging or mentioning on Instagram: what is the difference?
A tag, a mention and an invitation to collaborate are different things. Check which action you are trying to take:
- Tagging in a photo or reel: you link someone’s account to your post.
- Mentioning with @: you add the username after an @ in, for example, a caption, comment or story.
- Inviting someone to collaborate: you invite someone to appear as a collaborator on the post. This is also called a collab.
A regular tag does not automatically make someone a co creator. Does mentioning with @ work? Then an invitation to collaborate does not necessarily have to work as well.
Manual approval is also separate from this. The recipient decides whether to allow a tag. This may explain why your post is not on the other person’s profile. It does not explain why you cannot find a username.
Can’t find the account when tagging? Check the username
Search for the username, not just the name shown on someone’s profile. Multiple people can have the same profile name.
- Open the profile through an earlier conversation or search for the account.
- Compare the username character by character with what you entered.
- Look out for full stops, numbers and underscores. An underscore is the low line at the bottom of the line.
- Can’t find the profile? Ask the person for their current username.
A fictional example: you search for “Noor”, but the username is “noor.tekent”. Searching with only the first name can show you completely different accounts.
Can you open the correct profile, but can’t find it when tagging? Then check the settings below. An account not appearing in search results does not prove that you have been blocked.
Tagging a private account: check permission
You cannot tell whether tagging is possible just because an account is private. The setting that determines who may tag someone is separate from this.
The privacy information from AVROTROS Opgelicht explains that users can choose who may tag or mention them.
Ask the other person to look for tags and mentions in their settings. Is there a search field in the settings menu? Try “tags” or “mentions”. The names and location of these options may vary between app versions.
Ask the other person to check the setting for what you are trying to do: tag or mention. Changing your own settings does not give you permission to tag someone else.
Your tag is on your post, but not on the other profile
First check your own post. Has the tag been added there? Then adding it worked and you do not need to try again.
Meta explains on the page about privacy and control over tags that people can approve or reject tags before they appear.
So ask whether the recipient still needs to review your tag. Do not repost straight away if the tag is already there.
How to ask the other person to check the setting
For example, you could send: “I want to tag you in our photo from Sunday, but it isn’t working. Could you check whether you allow tags from me? It’s also fine without a tag.”
The other person does not need to make their entire account public for this. Just ask them to check the setting for tags. They decide whether they want to change anything.
Unable to tag because of a block or deleted account
A block may explain why you cannot find or tag someone. But a profile that cannot be found may also have another cause. Perhaps the username has changed, the account has been temporarily deactivated or the account has been deleted.
First check whether you have blocked the person yourself. Do you want to remove that block? Then read how to unblock someone on Instagram.
The “Restrict” feature is not the same as blocking. One failed tag does not prove that someone has restricted or blocked you. Do not use another account to get around a possible block.
Can’t you follow the person either? Then read why you can’t follow someone on Instagram. Other checks are needed for that.
Tagging doesn’t work for anyone: check your app and connection
Can’t you tag multiple accounts? Check whether the rest of Instagram loads normally. Then try one step at a time. This helps you notice which step makes a difference.
- Save your text. Copy your caption before closing the app.
- Close Instagram and open the app again. Then try adding the tag once.
- Check your connection. If necessary, switch between WiFi and mobile data. Keep your data allowance in mind.
- Check whether an update is available. Check your phone’s official app store to see whether you can update Instagram.
- Try again later. If other parts are not loading either, repeatedly trying again is unlikely to help.
Do not delete the app straight away. You may lose drafts that are stored only on your phone. Also check that you can log in again before logging out or reinstalling the app.

Temporarily unable to tag: follow the notification
Does Instagram say that an action is restricted or that you are trying to add too many accounts? Follow that notification. Without such a notification, you cannot know whether a temporary restriction is the cause.
- Stop repeatedly trying if Instagram rejects the action.
- Do not use automated tools to place many tags anyway.
- Only tag people who are relevant to the post and whom you want to mention.
- Follow the instructions in the notification, if there is one.
There is no fixed waiting time that applies to every tagging problem. A single general maximum for tags in photos, reels and stories also cannot reliably help you determine what is going wrong.
