YouTube video unavailable in your country: what can you do?

Person compares a phone and laptop to check why a video is unavailable at their current location.

Is a YouTube video unavailable in your country? This may be due to rights or local rules. First read the full notice and try another video. Does that one work? Then the problem is probably limited to that particular video. If it says something about a private video or your age, you need to check something else.

Below, you can read how to distinguish between the notices and what you can do as a viewer or creator.

Why a YouTube video may be blocked by country

According to the YouTube explanation of country restrictions owners can restrict videos to certain countries, usually because of licensing. Local laws can also be a reason for blocking videos.

A licence is permission to use or show something. With a regional block, your access depends on the country or area where you are watching. This is different from a video not loading because of a poor connection.

Suppose someone sends you a link to a sports clip. That person can watch it, but you receive a country notice. Check whether you are opening the same link and are in the same country. This helps you determine whether you are comparing the same upload.

The notice does not always say which agreement or law is responsible. Without further explanation, you cannot infer that from the notice.

What the notice for an unavailable YouTube video means

‘Video unavailable’ alone does not tell you much. Therefore, also read the explanation provided with it. The wording may differ, but you can use this table to determine what to check first.

What is the notice about? What does that mean? What do you check first?
Your country or region Access is restricted for a particular area. Are you opening the right video, and which country are you in?
A private video Not everyone is allowed to watch the video. Ask the owner whether you should have access and which account you need for it.
Age or confirming your age The notice concerns who is allowed to watch, not only your location. Read the explanation within YouTube and check which account you are using to watch.
Removed or no longer available The upload may no longer be viewable. Look for a new official upload on the creator’s channel.
An error without a clear explanation The cause is not yet known. Try another video and open the original link again.

A private video does not become public when you watch it from another country. A loading error also does not prove that there is a country restriction. Therefore, let the wording of the notice determine what you do next.

How to recognise a network filter on YouTube

A network filter can block websites or videos. This can happen at school, at work or via public Wi Fi. Such a filter is different from a country restriction on one video.

Check how much is not working:

  • Can you open the YouTube homepage?
  • Are several other videos also not working?
  • Do you see a notice from your school, employer or network administrator?

Does almost nothing work on YouTube, and does the notice mention your school or workplace? Ask the network administrator whether a filter is enabled. If you need the video for a lesson or task, include the link and explain why you need it.

Later, you can test on your own device at home whether the same link works there. This helps identify the cause, but it does not yet tell you which setting makes the difference. Do not try to bypass a school or workplace filter.

Why a YouTube video may be unavailable while travelling

Did the video still work at home in the Netherlands or Belgium, but not while travelling? Note which country you are currently in and which notice you see. A Dutch title or a Dutch account does not mean that you can watch the video there.

According to the EU explanation of online content while travelling paid online content must remain available during a temporary stay in another EU country. For free content, the provider may choose.

This general rule does not mean that every YouTube video is available in all EU countries. Did you pay for the video or access? Ask the provider what applies to your purchase or subscription.

Do you see no country notice, but only different recommendations than at home? That is something else. Open the direct link to the video to check whether you can still watch it.

What you can check when a YouTube video is unavailable

Follow these steps. You do not need to change settings or install anything immediately.

  1. Save the link and the notice. Copy the full explanation or take a screenshot. This lets you show exactly what is going wrong later.
  2. Open the video directly on YouTube. Is the video on another website, or did the link come from a message? Find the original video on YouTube. This helps you check where the problem occurs; it does not remove a country restriction.
  3. Try another video. Does that one work? Then look further into the notice on the first video. If nothing works, check your connection and any network filters.
  4. Check your account if the notice asks you to. With a private video or age notice, your location is not the first thing you need to check. Follow the explanation within YouTube. Do not give your password to another website offering help.
  5. Check whether you are already using a VPN. A VPN routes your internet traffic through another connection. Are you using one yourself on your own device? Temporarily turn it off and try the video through your regular connection. Do not change mandatory settings at school or work.
  6. Look for another official version. Check the creator’s channel or website. You may find another upload, a summary or an explanation of where you can watch it.
  7. Ask for help with the right information. Send the creator or provider the video link, the exact notice and the country where you are. Also say whether other videos work.

A VPN does not always solve a country restriction. Changing your computer’s region or modifying the URL is not a reliable solution either. Does the same clear country notice remain? Then repeatedly reloading is unlikely to help.

A website that offers to download the video for you is not automatically a solution either. Downloading may conflict with copyright or the terms of use. Therefore, look for an official place where you can watch the video.

What you can check as a creator when YouTube blocks a region

Has a viewer from the Netherlands or Belgium told you that your video does not work? First ask for the exact notice. ‘It does not work’ may indicate a country restriction, but it may also indicate a private video or a loading error.

Ask for this information:

  • The exact video link.
  • The full error message.
  • The country where the viewer is located.
  • Whether other YouTube videos do work.
  • Whether the viewer opens the video in the app, in a browser or on another website.

Then check your video in YouTube Studio to see whether information about availability or rights is provided. Use the information for that specific upload. The fact that you can watch your own video does not mean that the viewer can watch it too.

Does the explanation concern imagery or sound that you used? Then check whether you have permission for that material before editing or uploading the video again. Reuploading does not automatically clarify the cause or resolve it.

For example, you can send the viewer this message: ‘Can you send the exact notice and the video link? Also let me know which country you are watching from and whether other videos work.’ This asks for what you need without promising a solution in advance.
