The Instagram bio is the short piece of text at the top of a profile, below the name and above the posts. Tap the username next to a photo or video to open the profile. Looking for the ‘link in bio’? Look just below the profile text. Not everyone has filled in a bio or link.

How do you recognise the Instagram bio?
Bio is short for biography: a brief description of someone. In an Instagram bio, you can write, for example, about yourself, your hobby or your photos.
A fictional example: ‘Often outdoors, often on my bike. I share my favourite routes here.’ This tells a visitor what you share on your profile.
The bio is part of your entire profile. It is therefore not the text under an individual photo or video. That text is called the caption.
How do you view someone else’s Instagram bio?
- Open a post from that person and tap the username. You can also search for the username and then open the profile.
- Look at the top of the profile, below the name.
- Read the short description. No text there? That person may have left the bio empty.
You do not need to open a story for this. On a post, tap the username instead of the profile photo to go to the profile.
Where is the link in the Instagram bio?
By ‘link in bio’, someone means a clickable link next to the profile description. You can also read this in Linksmi’s explanation of the link in bio.
For example, does it say ‘recipe via the link in bio’ under a cooking video? Open the creator’s profile. Just below the profile text, look for a clickable link or a reference to links. So you are not looking for the recipe in the video caption.
The link may go directly to the recipe. Sometimes you first arrive at a page where you can choose from different topics. Look there for the name of the dish from the video.
Do you not see a link? Check that you opened the original creator’s profile. With an older video, the reference may also no longer match what is currently shown on the profile.

How do you view and edit your own Instagram bio?
Open your own profile. Your current bio is at the top, next to your name. Would you like to change the text? Follow these steps:
- On your profile, look for the option to edit your profile.
- Find the field for your bio and edit the text.
- Save the change.
- Open your profile again to see what the text looks like to a visitor.
The names and location of these options may vary between Instagram versions.
Does your bio explain what you want to share? You can briefly mention who you are and what you post. A fictional example is: ‘I am learning to bake and share my cakes and biscuits here.’
Would you like to add a clickable website? When editing your profile, look for a separate section for links. Simply typing a web address in your bio is not the same. Save the link and then check on your profile that it opens.
