Why might music disappear from a Reel or Story?
The creator or someone else who holds the rights to music decides who may use a recording. Permission for that use is called a licence. It may apply to a particular situation or period.
If that permission changes, it may explain why an older Reel suddenly no longer has music. But silence alone does not tell you what has happened. So first check whether there is a notice next to your post or the audio.
Also note exactly what is missing:
- You can’t find the track in the search results. That only tells you that you can’t find it there, not that it has disappeared for everyone.
- The music in an existing post is muted. Read any notice and check whether other audio works.
- The entire post has disappeared. Then check the notice about the post. Searching only for the song will not help you further.

Why does Instagram music vary by account or region?
Meta describes the licensed music library as intended for personal, not commercial use. Some business accounts, post types and regions have limited access.
Do you see less music on your business profile than on your personal profile? That does not necessarily mean there is an error in the app. First consider what you want to use the song for. Even if you can choose a track, you cannot automatically use it for every purpose.
Fictional example: you are making a video for your flower shop in Ghent. You can find the song you want on your personal profile, but not on your shop profile. Do not change your account type just to get around that restriction. Choose music that you are allowed to use for your shop video under the terms.
Fictional example: you share a Reel from Utrecht with a friend in Antwerp. You cannot find the same recording. That does not yet prove that the difference is due to your countries. Also compare the version of the song and the type of post. You need to check at that time whether a particular track is available.
What can you do if Instagram music disappears?
- Read and save the notice. Take a screenshot or write down the text. Does the notice concern music rights, an unavailable track or the entire post?
- Try another track. Do this in a draft. You do not need to publish a test post.
- Check the app if several tracks do not work. Close Instagram completely and reopen the app. Also check whether an update is available. These checks will not help if permission for the music is missing.
- See which next step matches the notice. Is it about rights or availability? Then do not keep uploading the same recording. Find a replacement that you are allowed to use.
- Check the options for your post. Does Instagram offer to replace the audio? If so, consider that option. If it is not available, first save your original video file before deleting or recreating anything.
Do you have permission for the music yourself and think the notice is incorrect? Keep your proof of permission handy. If the notice offers an option to have the decision reviewed, you can use it.

Which music can you use on Instagram?

- Your own music: have other creators or performers contributed? Check whether you also have their permission.
- Licensed music: check whether the permission applies to your video and to Instagram. For business use or advertising, check whether that is also allowed.
