Can’t post on Instagram? It could be due to your connection, the app, or your photo or video. An account restriction or an outage is also possible. First, check your profile to see whether your post is already there, so you do not post it twice. Then note the error message and check whether one file fails or everything you try does.
Below, you’ll read what you can test first and what the outcome tells you.
Why can’t you post on Instagram?
Check when the problem occurs. Can’t you select the photo, does uploading remain stuck, or do you only receive a notification after sending it? This helps you determine where to start.
The SocialKings explanation of posting problems mentions connection issues, an outdated app, files, content rules, account restrictions and outages as possible causes.
| What do you notice? | What should you check first? |
|---|---|
| Uploading remains stuck. | Test your connection and reopen the app. |
| One photo or video does not work, but another does. | Check the file that does not work. |
| A post with multiple photos or videos does not work. | Review the files separately and try a smaller selection. |
| You receive a notification about a restriction or the content. | Read the notification and follow the explanation provided. |
| Other parts of Instagram are not working either. | Check whether the problem is broader than just posting your content. |
These are indications, not proof of the cause. If uploading remains stuck, that does not immediately mean your account has been blocked.
What should you check when Instagram does not post your content?
Change one thing at a time and try again afterwards. This shows you which step makes a difference. Save your photo or video and copy the text of your post before closing the app.
1. Test your internet connection
Open a new web page. Is it not loading properly either? Then switch between Wi Fi and mobile data, if you can use both. When watching a large video, keep an eye on your data allowance.
A webpage loading properly does not prove that uploading a large video will also work. It is, however, a quick first check. Before trying again, check whether your previous post has appeared on your profile in the meantime.
2. Reopen the app and check for an update
Close Instagram completely and reopen the app. Check your phone’s app store to see whether an update is available. You can also restart your phone.
Do not delete the app as your first step. If you do want to delete the app or log out, make sure you have your login details and any additional login code available. Keep important material outside Instagram, because your drafts may not be saved.
3. Check your photo or video
Open the original file on your phone. Can you see the entire photo? Does the video play from beginning to end? Also check whether the file is already on your phone and does not still need to be downloaded.
Did you edit the photo or video in another app? Save a new copy from that app and try it. Keep the original separate.
Are you testing with another file? Choose something you genuinely want to share. If the test works, the post may become public immediately.
Suppose you cannot post your edited holiday video, but an ordinary photo works. Check the video first rather than immediately assuming your account is the cause.
4. Try fewer photos or videos at once
A carousel is one post containing multiple photos or videos. Review each file separately. Then try a smaller selection that you genuinely want to publish.
Does the smaller selection work? On your next attempt, do not immediately add all the other files. First investigate which file is causing the problem.
Is your video from TikTok? Then also read the explanation about posting a TikTok video on Instagram.
Can’t you post because of your account or an Instagram outage?
Do you see a notification about your account? Take a screenshot and read exactly what it says. Such a notification calls for a different approach from an upload that remains stuck.
You receive a notification about a restriction
Follow the explanation in the notification. Can you view more information or request a review? Use that option if you think the restriction is unjustified. The options available to you may vary.
There is no fixed waiting time for every temporary block. Does your notification state a period? Follow that period. Without a stated period, you cannot reliably predict when you will be able to post again.
Is the notification about the content of your post? Check the element Instagram mentions. Read the notification before trying to post the same content again.
You do not receive a clear notification about your account
Ask someone else whether they are also having problems at that moment. Preferably ask someone who uses a different internet connection. Can neither of you post anything? That may point to an outage, but does not confirm one yet.
Can you safely access your own account in another way, for example through a browser? Check whether you can post there. If you can, the problem is probably with your app or phone. If you cannot there either, that still does not prove that your account is blocked.
Is only another feature not working? Then read the explanation about an Instagram story that you cannot post or being unable to send messages on Instagram. Sending a private message is different from posting on your profile.
What should you do if you still cannot post on Instagram?
Gather the results of your tests before seeking help. This allows you to clearly explain what is going wrong and what you have already tried.
- Note the exact error message and the time.
- Write down whether you are trying to post a photo, video or carousel.
- Mention whether one file fails or every file you have tried.
- Note which internet connections you tested.
- Write down whether reopening the app, installing an update or trying another file made a difference.
Through the official Instagram page from Meta you can find the route to the Help Centre. Choose the explanation that matches your error message. Do not share a password or login codes when reporting a problem.
Do your tests mainly point to an outage? Save your post and try again later. Does one file seem to be the problem? Then try a new copy of that file.
