Why do you see two dates for the transition to TikTok?
The page with the official TikTok announcement shows August 2, 2018. In the text, Los Angeles is listed as August 1, 2018. That is why you come across both dates when searching. They are not two separate transitions.
For a retrospective in the Netherlands or Belgium, you can use the date above the page. If you want to explain exactly where the difference comes from, also mention the date listed for Los Angeles.
Why did Musical.ly change to TikTok?
Musical.ly and TikTok were merged into one app called TikTok. So it was more than a different name or a new logo.

What happened to your Musical.ly account and videos?
According to the announcement, your account, videos and followers would transfer automatically once you installed the update. So you did not have to start over.
That does not mean all your old videos are still available today. The announcement explains what was supposed to happen during the transition, not what happened to every account or video afterwards.

- Check your photo archive, old phone and backups for saved videos.
- Find out which email address you used for your account.

What was the difference between Musical.ly and TikTok?
Musical.ly is mainly remembered for short videos in which you lip synced to music. TikTok is used more broadly. Alongside music, you can see recipes, jokes and stories from everyday life, for example.
Suppose you make a short video in which you lip sync to a chorus. That fits the familiar memory of Musical.ly. A video showing how you make pasta fits TikTok’s broader use.
Those examples show the difference, but they do not mean that everything changed on the day of the transition.
Does Musical.ly still exist in the Netherlands and Belgium?
Musical.ly no longer exists as the separate social app it was at the time. You may still come across the name in old videos and posts. That does not mean you can still use the old service.
