On TikTok, ratio usually means that a reply gets more likes than the original comment or video. By doing this, someone is trying to show that other people prefer the reply. With ‘ratio’, someone is sometimes trying to win an argument without explaining anything. That person sees more likes as proof that more people agree with the reply. But a like does not tell you why someone clicks. A reply may simply be funny.
A ratio is therefore not always negative. Under a funny video, it can be a game. In an angry argument, someone may be trying to make fun of you with it. So also pay attention to the words and tone.
A fictional example: in your breakfast video, you write ‘Chocolate sprinkles belong on every slice of bread’. Someone replies: ‘Even on a cheese sandwich? Ratio’. This may be intended as teasing. Personal insults or repeatedly bothering you require a different approach.

What does ratio me 1 op 1 mean on TikTok?
‘Ratio me 1:1’, also written as ‘ratio me 1 op 1’, is usually an invitation to get a reply as many likes as the original comment. The goal is an equal number of likes, not more likes.
A fictional calculation example: the first comment has 80 likes and the reply also gets 80 likes. So you compare 80 with 80. Divide both numbers by 80: 80 ÷ 80 = 1. This gives you 1 to 1, or 1:1.
Not everyone uses this expression in the same way. So also read the surrounding comments. It is not an official TikTok score or an instruction you have to follow.
How do you respond to a ratio on TikTok?
First determine whether someone is criticising you, making a joke or trying to provoke you. Then choose what to do:
- Read your own post again. Is someone responding to what you wrote, or is there a misunderstanding?
- Give a brief reply to useful criticism. Did you explain something incorrectly? Correct it. For example, you could write: ‘I only meant this situation. That was not clear.’
- You can leave an isolated joke as it is. You do not have to respond to everything or make sure that your post gets more likes again.
- Stop if someone keeps provoking you. Continuing to explain yourself is of little use if someone only posts new insults. You can let the conversation rest.
- Save serious messages. Take a screenshot of threats before deleting anything. Report the message if necessary and block the person who is bothering you.
You cannot completely prevent a negative ratio. You can limit misunderstandings by making it clear that something is your preference. ‘I prefer this version’ says something different from ‘Everyone who uses the other version is doing it wrong’.
Do not ask for likes to get back at someone. The conversation will quickly become only about the numbers, no longer about what you wrote.

What does a TikTok ratio say about your reach?
A ratio by itself does not tell you whether your video is shown more or less often. In its explanation of how videos are recommended TikTok mentions likes, shares, comments, watching in full and skipping as factors that can influence recommendations.
That does not mean that an argument under your video helps, or that a popular critical reply causes fewer people to see your video. There is no fixed threshold at which a ratio is automatically good or bad for your reach.
