If Instagram filters are not working, it may be due to the effect, the app, your internet connection or your account. First check whether you are using a photo filter or a camera effect. Try another effect in the same place. Does that work? Then the problem is probably with that particular effect. You cannot restore an effect that has been permanently removed by reinstalling Instagram.

What type of Instagram filter are you using?
A filter can change the colours in your photo. But you may also mean a mask that moves with your face. They do not work in the same way. So first check which type of filter you are using.

An effect can belong to more than one type. For example, an independent creator may have made a camera mask. The creator’s name therefore does not tell you how to use the effect.
Meta announced in November 2023 new photo filters for photos and carousels A carousel is a post with multiple images. The announcement does not show which filters are currently available.
Why have my saved Instagram effects disappeared?
A saved effect is not stored as a separate photo edit on your phone. Even if you used it before, you may not always be able to open it later.
First check exactly what is going wrong:
- The effect is still there, but it will not open. Try another connection and also test another effect.
- One old effect is missing. Search for its name, if you still remember it. If other effects do work, the problem is probably with that particular effect.
- All effects are missing. Check the app and, if possible, compare it with another account.

Is an effect missing from your overview? That does not mean it is gone forever. If it has been permanently removed, you cannot get it back with an update or by reinstalling the app.
How do you find Instagram filters in Stories and Reels?
Find the effect under the type of post for which you want to use it. For a Story or Reel, look under the effects the app shows there. Find a photo filter while editing a photo for a post.
- Open the place where you previously used the effect: a Story, Reel or photo post.
- View the filter or effect options shown there.
- Is there a search option? Search for the effect’s name if you know it.
- Test another visible effect before continuing to search for the old one.
Do you not see a search option? Check whether there is an Instagram update. Then continue with the tests below. The location and availability of options may differ, so repeatedly following an old guide will not help.
Why does an Instagram effect not work on your photo?
Some camera effects need movement or a visible face. They therefore do not work automatically on a photo from your gallery. An effect that works while recording does not necessarily work on a video you recorded earlier.
Suppose you want to put a moving mask on an old holiday photo. Point the camera at your face and test the same effect. Does it respond now? Then it works with the camera, but possibly not on your existing photo.
Then try a new photo and a short video with the same effect. Also read the explanation for the effect, if there is one. Do you only want warmer colours or a greater difference between light and dark? Then ordinary photo editing is often a better fit.
Instagram effects are not loading: test your app and phone
Are several effects not working? Test one thing at a time and try the same effect after each step. This will show you which change helps.
- Switch internet connection. Try Wi Fi instead of mobile data, or the other way around. Keep your data allowance in mind.
- Close Instagram completely. Then open the app again.
- Check the official app store for an update. An update may fix an error.
- Check whether Instagram is allowed to use your camera. Check this in your phone’s settings. Does a photo from your gallery not work? Also check whether Instagram has access to your photos.
- Restart your phone. Then try an effect again.
Does the camera image remain black? Also open your phone’s regular camera. If that does not work either, investigate that camera problem first.
Only if this does not help should you consider reinstalling Instagram. First make sure you have your login details. Do you use two factor authentication, which requires an additional confirmation besides your password? Check that you can use it.
Save important material outside Instagram before deleting the app. Drafts stored only in the app on your phone may be lost. Reinstalling does not help with every cause.
Why are Instagram filters missing from one account?
Do you already have a second account? Test the same effect on it with the same phone and connection. Does it work there? Then the problem is probably not a general problem with your phone.
This still does not tell you why the effect is missing from your other account. Availability may differ by account or location. Without a clear message, you cannot establish that your region is the cause. Therefore, do not change your account type just to get one filter back.
This also applies to AI effects. If someone else shows such an effect, that does not mean you have the same option. Read the explanation or message for the feature. It may clarify why you cannot use the effect.
How do you report a problem with Instagram filters?
Are several effects still not working after these tests? Look in Instagram’s help options for the ability to report a problem. Describe what you see and what you have already tried.
Include:
- The name of the effect, if you know it.
- Whether you are creating a Story, Reel or photo post.
- Whether you are using the camera or an existing photo or video.
- Whether other effects work.
- Your phone model, your version of Instagram and the tests you have performed.
- A screenshot of the error message, without private information.
