You cannot reliably find someone on Facebook using only a phone number. It is better to ask for a link to the profile or search for a name you already know. Can’t find anything? That does not automatically mean someone does not have Facebook or has blocked you.
Below, you will read how to search for someone, what friend suggestions do and do not indicate, and which settings you can check for your own number.
Can you search Facebook using a phone number?
Facebook is not a phone book in which every number leads to a name. Even if someone has linked a phone number to an account, you cannot automatically find the profile using it.
There is a difference between searching, a visible number and a friend suggestion:
- Search: you enter something and check whether a matching profile appears.
- Visibility: this concerns who can read the number on a profile.
- Friend suggestions: Facebook may recommend a profile based on contact details.
A setting for friend suggestions is therefore not a search function. Conversely, a hidden number does not mean that the profile can no longer be found anywhere. For example, you may already have a name or profile link.
Did you enter the number and get no result? Then do not keep trying all kinds of formats. A Dutch country code +31 or Belgian country code +32 is not a trick for making a protected profile visible.
How to find someone on Facebook using a name or profile link
Ask for a profile link if you are already in contact and the other person can expect a message from you. Did you receive a number only for an appointment? Then it is not automatically clear that the person also wants private contact.
- Ask whether you may add them. For example: “Shall I add you on Facebook? Could you send me your profile?” This avoids having to choose between people with the same name.
- Search for the name you know. Do not use services to collect hidden personal data from a number first.
- Look at recognisable, public information. Think of a photo or place of residence that you already knew. One match is not enough to know for certain that you have the right person.
- Ask for confirmation if you are unsure. Send the found profile link in your existing conversation and ask whether it is correct.
A fictional example: after a cooking workshop, you exchange numbers to share recipes. Later, you also want to stay in touch on Facebook. Ask for a profile link in that conversation. That is clearer than looking through ten profiles with the same first name.
Do you have a mutual friend? Ask them to forward your profile. The other person can then decide for themselves whether they want contact. You do not need to obtain that person’s number or other private details for this.
Why can’t you find a Facebook profile using a phone number?
An empty search result usually does not tell you why you cannot find anything. The number could be a work number or an old number, for example. It may not be the number someone uses for Facebook. The name on Facebook may also differ from the name in your address book.
These are possible explanations. You cannot determine which explanation is correct from the search result.

Without confirmation, you cannot be sure that a number belongs to a particular profile. So do not send an address or other private details just because a name or photo seems familiar.
Does uploading contacts help you find someone on Facebook?
Uploading contacts is not a reliable way to link one number to one profile. This shares contact details from your address book with a service. That is different from typing a name into the search bar.
The Facebook help on discoverability and contact uploading refers to these topics. This does not mean that uploading a particular number will certainly produce a friend suggestion.
A friend suggestion also does not prove that you have found the right person. You cannot use it to establish whom an unknown number belongs to. Nor does it tell you whether that person has saved your number.
Therefore, do not turn on contact uploading just to search for one person. Your address book may also contain numbers belonging to family, colleagues and people you barely know. First ask whether the person wants to share a profile link.
Want to stop uploading contacts? Check two things separately: can you disable new uploads, and can you delete contacts uploaded previously? Do not assume that disabling the feature also immediately removes all previously shared data.
How to protect your phone number on Facebook
Would you like to make it less easy for people to find or be suggested to others through your number? Check both the visibility of your number and the settings for friend suggestions. Hiding your number alone does not tell you how Facebook uses your contact details in other ways.

See who may view your number
Open the contact details on your profile and view the audience. These are the people who may see this information. Choose the smallest available group that fits what you want to share.
Also check whether you have posted the number somewhere yourself. Think of a public post about a lost bag or a photo of an invitation. A setting in your contact details does not hide the number shown in such a post.
Read the friend suggestion setting
Search your privacy settings for discoverability or contacting. Read the explanation for the available choices. Does it concern who can see your number, who can receive a suggestion for your profile, or something else?
Choose based on that explanation. If you limit suggestions through your number, your profile is not automatically impossible to find. Someone may still know your name or have a link to your profile.
Check contact uploading and login separately
Check whether you upload contacts yourself and whether you want to continue doing so. This is separate from the question of who may see your phone number.
Want to remove your number from your account? First check whether you will still be able to log in and recover your account afterwards. Do you receive login codes by SMS? First arrange another available way to retain access.
When should you stop searching for someone on Facebook using a phone number?
Stop if someone indicates that they do not want contact. Did you receive no answer to your request for a profile? Then do not continue approaching them through other accounts or channels. A protected profile is also not a reason to look for a workaround.
Avoid websites that promise to reveal every Facebook profile using a phone number. Do not give them a Facebook password, login code or complete address book. Such a promise does not prove that the service works.
Do not post the number in a public group asking whom it belongs to. This spreads contact details without you being certain whom they belong to.
Is this about unwanted messages or threats? Do not try to determine someone’s identity through Facebook yourself. Save the relevant messages, block the contact where necessary and seek appropriate help.
