In TikTok, go to Profile and select Edit profile. Enter your new username and tap Save. Check the spelling first and make sure you edit the field for your @name. Also write down where you have shared your current name or profile link, so you can update those references afterwards.

Your TikTok username is different from your display name
Your username is your @name. Your display name is the name shown on your profile. Do you only want to show a different name? Then you edit a different field from the one used to change your @name.
A fictional example: your display name is ‘Noor draws’ and your username is ‘@noor.op.papier’. So the two do not have to be the same. ContentStudio explains this in its article about your TikTok username and display name.
Choose your new TikTok username before saving
Write down two or three options first. Choose a name that is easy to remember and say without having to explain the spelling every time.
- Choose what should remain recognisable. Think of your first name, nickname or the subject of your videos.
- Say the name out loud. Can you clearly explain where a full stop, underscore or number belongs?
- Compare your other profiles. Do you want to use the same name there? Check whether the spelling matches.
- Check your choice for typos. Do this before tapping Save.
Take the fictional examples ‘noor.tekent’ and ‘noor83926’. The first name is easier to remember. That can help you choose, but it says nothing about which name is available.
Do you use a shop name or another brand name? Check that it is clear the name belongs to you. Also make sure it is not confusingly similar to someone else’s name.
Which characters can your TikTok username contain?
You may use letters, numbers, underscores and full stops. A full stop cannot be at the end. An underscore is the low line: _.

It is better not to put a phone number or full date of birth in your name. Is your choice taken? For example, add a word that suits you instead of adding more and more personal numbers.
Cannot change your TikTok username: check the message
You can change your username once every 30 days. This is stated in the official TikTok explanation about changing your username.
Read the message you receive. Then see which step applies:
- You have to wait. Check when you last changed the name. Is there a date in the message? Use that date as your guide. Trying other names is not a way to get around the waiting period.
- The name is not accepted. Check the characters. Did you paste the name? Check whether a space was accidentally included.
- The name is taken. Try one of your other options. Do not assume that an old username will definitely become available later.
- You cannot see the right field. Check that you are in the right account. Also check that you are editing the username, not the display name.
Is it still unclear what is going wrong? Note the exact error message and consult TikTok’s help. Do not share a password or login code when asking for help.
Update your TikTok profile link after changing your username
Your profile link changes along with your username. So take out the list of references you made before changing it.
- Update your @name and profile link on your other social profiles.
- Replace the link on your website or personal link page.
- Check old posts where you direct people to your profile.
- Open the updated links yourself to check that they lead to the right profile.
