Instagram may suspend your account if it thinks you have violated the rules or if there is doubt about your account details. An error or misuse by someone else may also play a role. The word ‘suspended’ does not tell you exactly what happened. Therefore, open Instagram itself and save the full notification before changing anything.
Below, you will read what to look out for and how to prepare an appeal.
What does a suspended Instagram account mean?
When an account is suspended, Instagram has made a decision about it. Can you simply not log in? Then your account may not be suspended. There may also be a problem with your password, or Instagram may want to verify your details.
Therefore, check exactly what your notification says. The wording may differ between notifications.

Does it say ‘disabled’? That word alone does not mean that you can never get your account back. Read the full notification.
Why can Instagram suspend your account?
You can only assess the cause after reading the notification. Check whether Instagram mentions:
- A photo, video or comment. Save the mentioned post. Also save the caption and other information that helps explain the post.
- What was done to your account. Does the notification concern spam or unwanted activity? Note what you were doing around that time and which apps were linked to your account.
- Your account details. Does it concern your age, identity or impersonation? Check which detail Instagram says is incorrect.
These topics help you search, but they do not yet tell you what happened to your account. Does it only say that you ‘violated the rules’? Then write in your appeal that no clear reason has been given. Do not guess which violation Instagram means.
An Instagram decision can also be incorrect. Explain what you believe is wrong and what evidence you have for it.
Check the notification about your Instagram suspension
- Open Instagram itself. Do not simply click a link in an unexpected message about your suspension.
- Save the full notification. Take a screenshot. Make sure the reason, date and any response deadline are visible.
- Read what you need to do. Is Instagram asking you to confirm your details, or can you appeal? These are different steps.
- Check your account status if you still have access. Look in the settings for information about your account status. Save what it says there about the restriction.
Cannot you view your account status? Then use the notification you see when logging in.
Do you not see any option to respond? Consult the official Help Centre from Instagram. Search for the exact wording from your notification so that you do not follow steps for a different problem.
What should you do if your Instagram account is suspended and possibly hacked?
A hack and a suspension are not the same, but they can occur together. Do you see posts you did not publish or contact details you did not change? Save those indications. They still do not show why Instagram suspended your account.
First secure the email account linked to Instagram. Choose a unique password and, where possible, andable login with an additional code.
Can you still access Instagram? Also check where your account is logged in and which apps are linked to it. Look out for logins and apps you do not recognise.
If you have lost access, use the official steps to recover your account. Explain separately in your appeal which activity was not yours. For example, state when you last had access yourself and which change you discovered afterwards.
Entering a code or confirming your identity does not automatically mean that Instagram will lift the suspension.
What evidence should you save for your Instagram appeal?
Collect your evidence in one folder. Keep the original files and do not change the text on screenshots.
- Your username and, if you have one, the link to your profile.
- The full suspension notification, including the date and any response deadline.
- The mentioned post, including the caption and information that helps explain it.
- Messages about unfamiliar logins or changed details.
- A brief chronological overview of what you have seen yourself.
- Your submitted appeal, the acknowledgement of receipt and any case number.
Write down what you know and separately identify what you suspect. For example: ‘I saw an unfamiliar video on my profile on Tuesday’ is clearer than ‘My account must have been hacked’.
Keep personal documents separate. Share an identity document only if the official procedure requests it. Do not post it in public comments. Also do not send it to anyone who offers through a private message to recover your account.
How do you appeal your Instagram suspension?
Use the appeal option shown in your notification. Follow the instructions and respond on time if Instagram gives a deadline. You can find out which options you have in your own notification.
Include these three elements in your appeal:
- What you are appealing. State your username, the date of the suspension and the reason Instagram gives.
- Why you disagree. Briefly describe what you believe is incorrect.
- What evidence you have. Refer to files or details that support your explanation. Include them if possible.
This is a fictional example of a brief explanation:
My account was suspended on 8 May. The notification refers to a video I did not post. On 7 May, I received a message saying that my contact details had been changed. I did not make that change. I request a new review and attach the notification about the change.
Use this example only for the structure. Describe your own situation and do not mention a hack or another cause for which you have no evidence.
Save the confirmation after submitting your appeal. Is Instagram asking for more information? Respond through the official environment. There is no fixed recovery time or guaranteed outcome that applies to every account.
Help with an Instagram suspension in the Netherlands and Belgium
Do you live in the Netherlands or Belgium and want the decision reviewed outside Instagram? Appeals Centre Europe refers to Instagram disputes for users in the EU. The outcome is not binding: Instagram ultimately decides whether your account is restored.
Check there whether you can have your decision reviewed and which conditions apply. Not every case is automatically accepted. Keep your suspension notification, your previous appeal and Instagram’s response at hand.
Meta’s 2021 explanation of the Oversight Board concerns certain decisions about posts. That explanation does not provide a current general route to recover every suspended account.
What does not help with a suspended Instagram account?
- Paying someone who promises recovery. Do not give strangers your password, login code or recovery code.
- Submitting the same appeal repeatedly. Keep your messages and responses together. Add new information when requested.
- Hiding your location or connection to bypass the suspension. That does not explain why the decision would be incorrect.
- Buying followers, likes or views to restore your account. Purchased numbers do not resolve a suspension. They are also not the same as genuine attention, customers or people who naturally reach your posts.
Do you want to start again? A new profile will not bring back your old account. If you cannot create a profile, read why you cannot create a new Instagram account.

If you regain access, check the stated reason before continuing. Secure your account if you saw unfamiliar activity. If the decision concerned a post, check that post and Instagram’s explanation.
